The History of HG Stratton Butchers
The late Harold Stratton founded the business here in Market Square in November 1936. He was a Leighton Buzzard boy and started his working life as an apprentice to a local butcher, Mr Bailey. On the sudden death of his employer, he found himself out of work so he decided to open his own shop.
Harold Stratton was an excellent butcher selling only the best quality meats. Hanging the beef well and producing excellent pork and beef sausages, using his own secret recipe, which we still use today. He became very successful with his business becoming legendary and customers soon came from far and wide.
Although my family were themselves butchers, Mr Stratton's reputation was such that they sent me to work and gain experience with him. He was an inspiration to me and I learnt so much from him. He was a jovial man, with a great personality. Although I was only a boy, he always had time to talk and taught me all aspects of the trade. I feel very privileged to have known him and worked with him.
After a couple of years my parents expanded their business and bought a butchers shop in Bletchley, near Milton Keynes. They asked me if I would go and manage it for them and I enjoyed 18 very successful years there.
In 1977 H G Strattons was up for sale, so my wife Elizabeth and I purchased the business. We have enjoyed every moment being in Leighton Buzzard. We have wonderful staff, great customers and the shop has been very successful, winning awards for various goods we produce. In April 2003 we handed the overall running of the business to our son Andrew. I am still in the background advising him when I can and helping when staff are on holidays and especially at Christmas which is our busiest time.
Andrew has started to introduce new products reflecting today's modern lifestyle but ensuring that the traditional values on which Harold Stratton started this business remain.
